Karachi is the largest city and birth place of Plastic surgery in Pakistan. Prof. Khalid Mehmood Durrani established the firs Plastic Surgery department at Dow Medical
College (DMC) and Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) in the year 1965.He was Diplomate American Board in Plastic Surgery. From year 1965 to year 1976, almost a period of 11 years, other than Prof. Durrani there was not a single Plastic surgeon in Pakistan. In year 197 6 Dr. Gool Talati and Dr. Faiz Muhammad Khan arrived in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. The former joined Holy Family Hospital and later joined Jinnah Post graduate Medical (JPMC) center, where he established the second department of Plastic surgery in Pakistan. In 1988 the third department of Plastic surgery was established at Mayo Hospital Lahore by Prof. Abdul Hakim Bahar. During the years of seventies and eighties, post-graduation in Plastic surgery was not offered by College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) and doctors interested in pursuing post-graduation in Plastic surgery were, either have to go abroad or pursue university degrees for Master of Surgery (MS) in Plastic Surgery. Since in early eighties there were no departments in any other parts of Pakistan other than Karachi, Sindh, the only post graduates who pursue for MS in Plastic surgery had to be registered with University of Karachi either through Dow Medical College (DMC) or Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center ( JPMC) Karachi . The first MS in Plastic surgery was Dr.Kaneez Fatima Amla who passed her MS in year 1990. In the next year second MS in Plastic surgery was Dr. Nasir Zaman and third one was Dr. Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz and in 1992 author was fourth. The Association of Plastic Surgeons of Pakistan (PAPS) was founded and registered in the year 1994. 25 Surgeons doing major work of Plastic surgery and Burns and having qualification of American Board in Plastic Surgery, FCPS ( Gen. Surg. ), MS (Plast Surg) and FRCS ( Gen. Surg) were made bonafide members in 1996, during 1st meeting of PAPS CPSP initiated the program of fellowship in Plastic surgery in year 1993, though its paper work was going on behind the curtains, much
earlier than that. The first exam was held in year 1995 and the candidate was Dr. Obaidullah from Peshawar. The fellowship program very quickly took over Universities program due to various reasons. Every medical college having department of Plastic surgery was recognized for training. In a period of 25 years, from 1994 to 2019 the
number of fellows has swollen to 170 plus. Though the MS program of Universities was going on hand in hand with CPSP program,
